Delaware Day event set for Thursday

Maui’s annual Delaware Day celebration will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday at the Maui Lani Shopping Center pavilion in Wailuku.

The pavilion is located between Jersey Mike’s and Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice.

All First Staters visiting Maui or anyone who was born in, has lived in, worked in or went to school in Delaware are invited to attend. All attendees are asked to wear an article of clothing from Delaware.

Shopping center hosts food drive

In partnership with the Maui Food Bank, Pukalani Terrace Center is hosting a holiday food drive through Dec. 31.

“We are happy to join with our community in support of Maui families,” said Sandy Yamada, property manager of Pukalani Terrace Center. “With your help, we can make a difference in the lives of our neighbors during this holiday season.”

Nonperishable dry goods and canned goods can be dropped off at Ace Hardware, Bank of Hawaii, Kalei’s Lunchbox and Foodland. Checks made payable to Maui Food Bank can also be dropped off at participating retailers. To make a virtual donation, visit mauifoodbank.org.

Volunteers needed for native plantings

The Coral Reef Alliance is seeking volunteers to help install native plants in West Maui on Friday at the nonprofit’s greenhouse and Dec. 10 at its Wahikuli field site.

Volunteers can also participate in a native planting kit program where they can grow native plants at home to be transplanted to the field site. For more information, contact Makayla Richmond at mrichmond@coral.org.

Angel Tree tags available for pickup

In partnership with The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program, Maui County Federal Credit Union will have Angel Tree tags at its Kahului, Lahaina and Wailuku branches through Dec. 10.

Participants can pick up a tag, purchase the requested gift and then return the gift to the same branch with the tag during business hours.

Branches are located at 270 Dairy Rd. in Kahului, 270 Lahainaluna Rd. in Lahaina and 1888 Wili Pa Loop in Wailuku. Monetary donations for The Salvation Army are also being accepted at all branches.

Color Dash 2023 set for Jan. 21

The Kekaulike High School Foundation will host the 2023 Color Dash from 9 to 11 a.m. on Jan. 21 at the King Kekaulike High School campus.

The Color Dash is a 1.25-mile run or walk. There will be nine color stations, prize drawings, food, and music and entertainment.

Participants are encouraged to wear white and will be showered with different colors at each color station. Proceeds from the event will support grants for teachers at all Kekaulike Complex schools and scholarships for King Kekaulike High School graduating seniors.

MEO holiday book drive ends Friday

A holiday book drive for Maui Economic Opportunity’s Head Start program will be held through Friday at Barnes & Noble in the Maui Marketplace in Kahului.

Customers can purchase a book from the store and make a donation to the drive at Barnes & Noble location at Maui Marketplace in Kahului.

Head Start offers preschool at no cost to low-income families on Maui and Molokai. Children who are homeless, in foster care or part of families receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families are given priority.

The focus of Head Start is to prepare 3- and 4-year-olds for kindergarten while working with the entire family. Case managers connect families to supportive services in the community and parents are involved in their children’s education by sitting on policy boards.

So far, more than 1,000 books have been collected of this year’s goal of 1,750 books.

Cancer patient workshop offered

Local nonprofit Maui Cancer Resources will host a free “Stay Sane and Healthy During the Holidays” workshop for cancer patients from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Dec. 10 at Trinity Episcopal Church-by-the-Sea in Kihei.

Lunch, coffee, tea and snacks will be included.
